The General Practice Care of People with Intellectual Disability: barriers and solutions

This article is based on responses to a random sample of general practitioners (GPs) surveyed throughout Australia. The research identified a range of barriers which compromise the quality of health care available to people with intellectual disability, the main ones being communication difficulties with both patients and other health professionals, together with problems in obtaining patient histories. The article identifies several immediate practical methods of improving the current situation. It also identifies long term strategies which need to be set in place to ensure better health care of people with intellectual disability by GPs. Keyword: Health
