Multicultural life skills assessment of individuals with severe disabilities

Written Material

This article provides a sound introduction especially for teachers to the importance of a multicultural perspective in the process of assessment of students and its importance in planning the student's educational needs and outcomes. The authors provide some initial competencies that teachers should gain before carrying out a multicultural-focussed assessment. The article is good because it expands the traditional concept and practice of 'assessment' away from a scientific framework based upon presumed characteristics of 'intellectual disability' to a focus on the individual student and his or her needs which may include recognition of the individual as a member of a specific cultural group. Keywords: Education, Cross-Cultural. Searchword: Families
