Housing for Tim: Supporting Independent Living

Written Material

Louise Hackett, parent of Tim, describes the process by which he moved out of home into a place which he rented and shared with another man. While knowing she and her family have made the right decision, she describes her own feelings and fear about this move (particularly as Tim seems to have quite high support needs). She also describes what she learnt through the process, as well as listing some essential elements in the whole process: a team of people including supportive and active professionals, a list of 'non-negotiables' that are conditions for suitable living arrangements, an equal partnership within the team, development of real relationships with team members, and involvement of families in choosing housemates. This is an excellent article, highlighting many themes in the inclusion movement. Keywords: Accommodation, Individualisation
