Becoming a Client - an experience of loss of power

Written Material

Carolyn Quinn, a parent and pyschologist, reveals the disempowerment that she experienced when she found herself in the role of 'client' following the birth of her son. Quinn asks professionals to avoid seeing families who have a child with a disability as 'burdened'. She suggests that they concentrate instead on the strengths that parents/families rely on to manage their lives . This will influence the way that professionals view and interact with families and lead to families having a more positive outlook. Keywords: Families, Professionals
