A small death in Cape Town,

Newspaper Cutting

"The apartheid system was far more complicated than many realise. It was never simply black versus white. The concept of divide and rule, which kept the Boers in power so long, relied on creating hatred and jealousy between as many different groups as possible.",With this framework in mind comes the story of Ivan Overmeyer, labelled both a 'simpleton' and a 'Cape Coloured'. The story is both triumphant and sad. Ivan uses his label to cross racial boundaries. People allowed him to do this because they believed he was too 'simple' to understand that he shouldn't mix with certain people, but Ivan knew exactly what he was doing. His vulnerability was a source of power, but it was also what led to his eventual murder. Keyword: Attitudes
