The influence of the socioeconomic characteristics of disabled people on their employment status and income

Written Material

A research article written by a white man with a disability looking at unemployment amongst people with disabilities in an effort to access whether variables such as class, race and gender have an impact on unemployment amongst this group of people. His findings indicate that white men with disabilities are at a considerable advantage over others with disabilities. The author argues that being white and male in the USA and other western countries is to have access to a powerful position. He concludes, however, by arguing for activists with disabilities to become part of a wider based activism to bring about change even if this means that they will lose out as a result of this.
