This comprehensive paper describes people's fight to be part of their communities. The author believes that while "the iron fences of the institution may be coming down, the walls of the service world are still firmly in place". It examines what it is about social service systems that produces isolation and what happens when the community cuts itself off from people who are disabled. Stories are told of people's experiences, of families and friends who provide support circles, and the article discusses what 'community' really means and ways of working towards a whole community.
