Promoting Friendships through Recreation and Leisure

Written Material

This article highlights some of the key issues in facilitating friendships between individuals with and without disabilities. It makes the point that it is important for people with disabilities to spend time in community activities and settings where others form relationships rather than in anonymous places such as theatres and shopping malls. Two different projects are briefly described: Project Trail, which works with high school students, and the Dowling Friendship Program, which concentrated on children in grades K-6. Note: We hold some of the resources referred to in the article. Keyword: Friendship
