My Assistant and I: disabled children's and adolescents' roles and relationships to their assistants

Written Material

This qualitative study carried out in Sweden gives a very good insight into the various roles and relationships that children and adolescents with restricted mobility have with their assistants and the consequent impact on their lives. Assistants were perceived as fitting into five categories: the replaceable assistant; the assistant as mother/father; the professional assistant; the assistant as a friend; and the ideal assistant. The ideal relationship was seen to be a mutual relationship. This study has implications for the preparation and training of assistants. Keywords: Individualisation, Education,
