Looking past family

Written Material

This article discusses the misconceptions and overt discrimination which surrounds parents with an intellectual disability. The child protection system perceives disability as an automatic risk factor, discriminating against the parent while claiming to protect the child's interest. Writing on behalf of the Office of the Public Advocate, Sykes recommends the system act proactively by encouraging better support to parents through strategies that build on strengths and account for the unique family situation.
