Issues in providing housing and support

Written Material

This is a good article about the differences between traditional residential agencies and those that are truly individualised and person-centred. Shoultz argues that a major role of residential agencies should be to commit themselves to the people they support (and that also means staff making a personal commitment to a person). This 'person-centredness' then allows the agency to truly support a person - finding out a person's dreams and helping them that person to realise them. The person's needs, hopes and wishes are what are supported by the staff, not the needs and requirements of the residential agency. Shoultz also discusses possible new roles for staff, new commitments by agencies to staff, friendships and natural routines rather than 'programming'. Keyword: Accommodation
