Getting the Job done - Learning to expand the social resources available to people with severe disabilities at work

Written Material

John O'Brien has been involved for many years in advocacy for people with disabilities. He and his wife Connie Lyle, focus on assisting organisations to respond effectively to the needs of individuals. This article looks at ways in which people with disabilities can work in open employment situations through the assistance and support of families, job coaches and co-workers and, importantly, through utilising available social resources. It lists ways in which job coaches can act detrimentally to discourage independence. It lists positive ways to increase the active support and involvement of co-workers.
