Employment Opportunities for People with Severe Learning Difficulties

Written Material

These are good notes for people to use when starting to think about creating real jobs and career opportunities for people with high support needs. There is an emphasis in these notes on systems change - the difference between old systems based on segregation, rejection, continuum of services through life and limited choice, and new systems driven by individuals and their communities. Supported employment provides one basis for assisting people within these new systems, but these notes also take a critical approach to supported employment arguing that it is not necessarily a utopia. The presenter therefore then goes on to discuss ways by which supported employment initiatives can provide opportunities for people to become valued, contributing members of their community.
