Disability Discrimination, Education and Independent Advocacy

Written Material

In this article Lorraine Zeni discusses some of the issues surrounding an inclusive education complaint lodged before the HREOC by Independent Advocacy SA against the SA Dept of Education and Children's Services. She outlines the process which culminated in the complaint being withdrawn as the result of the parties concerned negotiating an agreement that the child involved would attend her local school with the support she needed. She also gives the reasons leading to this decision. Zeni also discusses the positive outcomes which have taken place for the child, the school and wider community. She attributes these to sustained and coherent advocacy combined with the willingness of individuals to be open to new ways of thinking and acting. Keyword: Advocacy
