Crossing the river: Creating a conceptual revolution in community and disability

Book

It has only recently been discovered that the conceptual revolution that moved people from terrible institutions to community based settings is also flawed (although there is absolutely no doubt that it represented a tremendous improvement in the lives of people with disabilities). The new conceptual revolution beginning to emerge argues that rather than dealing with systems, it is more important to rediscover the importance for all people of being and feeling embedded in a web of personal relationships, to make their living experience more connected to other people in their community and to find ways to intrinsically involve them in its flow.
