Building Social Relationships through Valued Roles: Three Older Adults and the Community Membership Project

This paper highlights the ways in which social relationships can be nurtured through the establishment of community roles for people with developmental disability. An important factor in this is understanding the person and their needs. In it we meet three individuals who were each supported by a paid community builder to engage in community activities which interested them, with the aim of gaining positive, valued social roles and meaningful relationships with other members of their local community.
