Advocacy and the Challenging of Authority

Written Material

Kendrick addresses the fact that the role of advocate comes more naturally to some than others, particularly given that our attitudes towards authority are inevitably shaped by our family and culture. He stresses that if advocacy is to take place, there needs to be a willingness to challenge authority if and when appropriate. Advocates bring varying skills to advocacy - Kendrick suggests that a wise advocate will know their limits and stay within those limits. He cautions advocates to put thought into how any confrontation should be undertaken, emphasising the need to maintain a responsible and balanced approach when taking up issues on behalf of devalued people.
