A Matter of Life and Death

Written Material

All people need to have some control over their own lives, to have some form of independence. Belinda, who has high support needs, wanted the chance to lead an independent life so much that she went on a hunger strike. Kathy, Belinda's mother, could have chosen for Belinda the more traditional range of support such as a group home but felt that this would not be the best option. Therefore, with the support of her loving parents and assistance from consumer-governed supports, Belinda began to live in her own home and fulfill her own dreams and ambitions. This article describes Belinda's life in her own home. Keywords: Accomodation, Families, Health, Individualisation
