File 11199 - 21st Century Eugenics

Kathie Snow considers the book War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race by Edwin Black as an eye opening window into eugenics of the past and future. Snow suggests it is prophetic, evidenced by President Bush signing the Combating Autism Act in late 2006 and the recommendations that followed in 2007 offering all women regardless of age, screening for down syndrome. Whilst under the guise of "cure and prevention" these acts and recommendations are, Snow describes, an effort to eliminate people with autism and Down Syndrome. No thought has been given to those individuals with autism or Down Syndrome and whether they believe they need to be "cured". Could these actions be the tip of the iceberg? Who will be next - people who require glasses?

File 11200 - Quality of Life

What does quality of life mean and who defines it? Kathie Snow notes that the only person qualified to comment on an individuals quality of life is the person living that life. Sometimes the best intentions interfere with an individual’s quality of life, for example, numerous therapies and treatments to attempt to cure or limit a disability. At the end of the day, when lying on your deathbed, are you thankful for being able to walk and talk or are you thankful for your friends, family and those experiences you had and shared?

File 3323 - Movement Differences and Diversity in Autism and Mental Retardation: Appreciating and accomodating people with communication and behavaviour challenges

This book has a look at persons who have, since early childhood, had significant difficulties in communicating and controlling behaviours and making themselves understood.  The authors suggest that many of the challenges to communicating stem from movement differences.  These differences in movement are unique to every individual and each should e supported in a very individualised and personal way.  The authors challenge technologies that measure intelligence by observing communication.

Burton Blatt, an outspoken reformer in the disability field, shares essays on the horrors of institutionalisation and basic personal issues which will depend on the future success of normalisation and improved education for the disabled. This publication contains 15 essays.

File 3325 - Whose Life is it Anyway? How one teenager, her parents, and her teacher view the transition process for a young person with disabilities

This book will assist three groups of individuals. First, professionals working with individuals who are transitioning from school, the secondary transition phase. Secondly, parents will find this book useful as a tool for providing support, clarification and insight into the range of emotions experienced during the secondary transition phase. Finally, this book could assist those persons who aspire to further their experiences after high school. The book is a composite of actual events experienced by several families and persons with disability as they leave high school.

File 3326 - Do You Hear What I Hear? Parents and Professionals Working Together for Children with Special Needs

The aim of this book is to give insight into the dynamics between parents and professionals, enabling the reader to understand where the professional is coming from and what they are thinking. File 157 - Through the Same Door

This is an illustration of transition from high school to university. The documentary follows the path of Micah Fialka-Feldman who was in mainstream education from elementary school. Micah always expressed an interest in attending university and with the help of his parents and teachers and the staff at Oakland University it was made possible. This documentary is a very good example of the possibilities of fully inclusive education.

File 144 - Inside the Edge: A Journey to Using Speech through Typing

This documentary is written and narrated by Jamie Burke, a 15 year old high school student with autism. Whilst the focus of this documentary is on Jamie's personal experiences with the use of facilitated communication and developing speech he also talks about being in a mainstream high school. This documentary includes footage of Jamie at school with his peers.

File 155 - Beyond Expectations - Profiling People with a Disability in Employment

This DVD profiles nine individuals working in open employment across a spectrum of ages. The DVD and those interviewed encourage employers and persons with disabilities to look at their individual abilities not their disability.

File 156 - My Classic Life as an Artist: A Portrait of Larry Bissonnette

In this award winning documentary Larry Bissonnette talks about his early life in an institution and assesses it as a form of "apartheid" better for "growing vegetables rather than people". He talks of his early ability to use art to communicate. It pays to note that though Larry is not institutionalised anymore he does live with his sister and most of the daily activities seen in the documentary are in sheltered/disability only environment.
